The view from Masaya
The most noticable features of the area surrounding Masaya are the black and reddish rocks and the lack of vegitation. Even 1000's of years after the last eruption there is very little growing on the volcano itself.
This was at one time one of the craters of the Masaya volcano
When the first priests arrived in this part of Nicaragua, they were told by the natives that the crater was the gateway to hell. When you visit, it is not hard to understand why they thought this. His response was to construct the cross at the top of the volcano in order to exorcise the devil from the area.
