Rural Nicuragua

On Tuesday we took a journey to Nicaragua. This was perhaps the most interesting part of the trip. It started with the border crossing which consisted only of a few buildings and a gate in the middle of the jungle. Apparently the Costa Rican and Nicaraguan attitude to border control can be summed up as, "You want to come here, ok whatever..."

After you enter Nicaragua and begin driving North along the Panamerican Highway you will pas Lake Nicaragua on the right, one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world. And in the lake is an island made from two different volcanos. One is a conical volcano and the other has the top blown off from the last eruption.

The remaining pictures were take from the road as we travelled from one city to another.

Along the highware we passed several groups of children with shovels filling in pot holes. They will spend the m,orniong doing this and then spend the afternoon seeking donations from motorists. Our driver tol us that these children are either parentless or else they have very poor parents. They can make a dollar or two a day doing this.
